Title: Statewide School Library Lead
Organization/School: Kentucky Department of Education
Program Description
This session chronicles the Kentucky Association of School Librarians' (KASL) transformative journey from a background player to a leading force in library advocacy, mirroring the empowering narrative of "Dirty Dancing." Just as Baby emerged from the corner to become a confident dancer, KASL has stepped into the spotlight to revolutionize library advocacy in Kentucky.
KASL's journey from background player to advocacy superstar has been multifaceted. We began by mapping Kentucky's library ecosystem, gaining an understanding of school, public, academic, and special libraries and librarians to craft inclusive advocacy strategies. As legislative challenges arose, we worked on refining our skills in analyzing and swiftly responding to actions impacting libraries, developing proactive approaches to address potential threats.
Our communication underwent quite a few changes, particularly in social media engagement, dramatically increasing our visibility and ability to disseminate crucial information effectively. We created collaborative advocacy by building partnerships across library types, creating a unified and powerful voice for all libraries. Our engagement with lawmakers evolved, including working with a lobbying firm and developing strategies for effective communication with state legislators, including meticulous meeting preparations and compelling argument presentations.
We also implemented programming to engage members, raise awareness, and showcase the value of school libraries to the broader community. Grassroots support became a cornerstone of our efforts as we activated and organized library supporters at the local level, including students, parents, teachers, and community members. Embracing data-driven advocacy, we utilized impactful storytelling and strategic data collection to bolster our efforts.
Professional development received a boost with advocacy training, helping individual librarians become effective advocates themselves. Finally, we developed and implemented adaptable, long-term advocacy plans to ensure sustained influence in Kentucky's ever-changing political landscape.
This session will inspire attendees to elevate their state associations from quiet networks to advocacy superstars. By sharing KASL's experiences, successes, and lessons learned, we aim to equip participants with practical strategies for enhancing their advocacy efforts, building influential networks, and effectively responding to challenges facing the library profession.
Participants will learn how to choreograph their advocacy dance, from the first tentative steps to show-stopping performances that command attention and support for school libraries. We'll demonstrate how to turn potential missteps into graceful maneuvers, synchronize efforts with partners, and create a performance that keeps stakeholders engaged and supportive.
By the end of this session, attendees will be ready to take center stage in their states, ensuring that their school libraries are never again relegated to the corner but are instead leading the dance of educational excellence and community engagement.
