Program Description
Discover how to use the AASL Standards to foster critical thinking, creativity, and collaboration in elementary school libraries. Attendees will discover practical strategies for integrating the six Shared Foundations into engaging library lessons and programming tailored to young learners. This session will explore new information, tools, and resources offered in the second edition of the National School Library Standards to help school librarians interpret and express Competencies for lesson development and scaffold them for growth through the grade levels.
This session will focus on:
1. Expressing Competencies as learner outcomes or “I can” statements to create effective lesson plans and objectives that resonate with elementary learners.
2. Viewing the Competencies through the Domains (Think, Create, Share, Grow) to ensure comprehensive learning experiences and understand how the Domain influences the expression of each Competency as an outcome.
3. Scaffolding standards and outcomes for different grade levels, supporting progression and skill development as learners advance.
4. Collaborating with classroom educators and content areas to integrate library skills into broader curricular goals.
Examples and activities tailored to elementary school libraries will illustrate these approaches, and attendees will leave with a practical handout of lesson ideas and tools to immediately implement in their libraries. Whether you are new to the AASL standards or seeking fresh strategies, this session will empower you to transform your school library into a dynamic, student-centered learning environment.
