Digital Citizenship Through Dystopian Literature
Grade Level: 6-8, 9-12
Session Strand: Teaching & Learning
Presenter
Kristen Mattson
Dr. Kristen Mattson has been in education for nearly twenty years as a classroom teacher and school librarian. She now supports pre-service school librarians in the field and teaches grad courses in media literacy and digital citizenship at The University of Illinois. Additionally, Kristen has served as a subject matter expert on various projects with ISTE, the National Parent Teacher Association, the Bureau of Education & Research, and the Kentucky Department of Education and Nebraska Department of Education. She also loves taking what she’s learned in the field and sharing it with educators through conference presentations, school district partnerships, webinars and writing. Kristen is the author of "Digital Citizenship in Action" (ISTE, 2024) and "Ethics in a Digital World" (ISTE, 2021). She also authored the “Digital Citizenship in Action” ISTE U course.
Outside of work, Kristen stays busy raising her three amazing teenagers, William, Lily and Alice in Yorkville, Illinois. She is also enjoying a honeymoon every day with the love of her life, Adam. Together, they enjoy traveling to places near and far, working on their fixer-upper, and kicking butt at bar trivia under the team name “Dr. & Mr.”.
Description: Striving to have meaningful dialogue with students around digital citizenship topics? Hoping to find your 'in' as an instructional partner? This session will help you do both! Learn ways to incorporate digital citizenship & tech ethics lessons alongside some of the classic (and new!) dystopian books, short stories, & poems that are often studied in the classroom. A reading list, lesson ideas, & standards alignment will be shared, and participants will have a chance to add to this curated list as well.
